English/Language Arts News

As we embark on week six, ELA classes will begin wrapping up our first unit on Folktales from around the world. Students will take time this week to view more folktales from various cultures and read texts of the same. At the end of the week, students will have a test over the folktales they have viewed and read from the last two weeks. Next week, as we start Unit 2, Exploring the Extraordinary, we will turn our attention to the genre of Fantasy. Students will read texts, view videos, and develop writing throughout this unit that relates to the Key Concept of Creativity while considering Character, Setting, and Theme.

Progress Reports come out this week. Please be on the lookout for these important updates of your child's progress in each of his/her classes. Keep in mind that this is only a snapshot of your child's progress up to this point. Students still have ample time to continue to improve scores for his/her classes before the first official report card comes out later in October. Please check Parent Portal regularly so that you can speak with your child and his/her teacher about any missing assignments that need to be turned in. Turning in all missing work is a tremendous help in improving class grades!

Math News

Students took a Unit 1 test on Friday last week. This unit test was our first test of the semester and will therefore count as 60% of students' overall grade. Grades from this test will be recorded and posted by Wednesday of this week. Students receiving a grade lower than 70 will be given the opportunity to retake the test.

We will begin our study of Unit 2 this week. In Unit 2, students learn about "Stretching and Shrinking" - more specifically: similar figures, scale factor, and proportional relationships. Staying consistent with past weeks, students will receive a homework assignment on Tuesday and it will be due on Thursday. As we continue our study of mathematics throughout this semester, homework assignments are essential to student learning and growth.

My biggest concern among all classes right now is regarding students with missing assignments. It is important to note that missing assignments are reflected as a score of "zero" and continue to negatively impact students' overall grade. Please make sure your student understands the importance of completing and turning in their assignments.

I am here to help in any way possible. If you ever have any questions or concerns, please email me. We are in this together.
Go Panthers!
