Team Kani News: September 26-30, 2016

Parent Conferences Parent Conferences will take place in two weeks.  Each student received a Conference Request Letter on Monday, September 26.  Please return your letter indicating your top choices for a conference as soon as you can.   Team Kani will host 20 minute conferences and you will have the opportunity to speak to each teacher on the team.  You will start your conference with a pair of teachers and then meet with the next pair.  Mrs. Hubbard and Coach Page will meet with parents in Coach Page's room for a 10 minute conference.  Mr. Spinks and Ms. Hughes will meet with parents in Ms. Hughes's room for the remaining 10 minutes of your 20 minute conference time. English/Language Arts News This week in ELA, we will wrap up our first unit on Folktales and begin Unit 2,  Exploring the Extraordinary.  In this unit, students will learn about Science Fiction (Sci-Fi), Urban Myths, and Mystery. Over the coming weeks, we will view short Sci-Fi films and clips that illustrate the elements of this fascinating genre of literature. Additionally, students will read Sci-Fi texts, and respond through writing to the various films and texts we have studied. Students will also have the opportunity to write their own Sci-Fi narrative, as well as conduct research and report on some aspect of Sci-Fi. After finishing Sci-Fi, we will then turn our attentions briefly to Urban Myths and Mystery to round out our unit. All ELA classes will be visiting the Media Center on Tuesday to hear about our upcoming Book Fair later in October!  Students will also have the opportunity during this visit to return and check out new and exciting books. English/Language Arts News As we embark on week six, ELA classes will begin wrapping up our first unit on Folktales from around the world. Students will take time this week to view more folktales from various cultures and read texts of the same. At the end of the week, students will have a test over the folktales they have viewed and read from the last two weeks. Next week, as we start Unit 2,  Exploring the Extraordinary, we will turn our attention to the genre of Fantasy. Students will read texts, view videos, and develop writing throughout this unit that relates to the Key Concept of Creativity while considering Character, Setting, and Theme. Progress Reports come out this week. Please be on the lookout for these important updates of your child's progress in each of his/her classes. OPEN HOUSE is Thursday, September 8! Please join us for Open House on Thursday night! The annual Title 1 meeting will be held from 6:00-6:30 pm Open House will be from 6:30-7:30 pm.  You will have the opportunity to meet all of your child's teachers.
