Team Kani News: September 26-30, 2016

Parent Conferences

Parent Conferences will take place in two weeks.  Each student received a Conference Request Letter on Monday, September 26.  Please return your letter indicating your top choices for a conference as soon as you can.
Team Kani will host 20 minute conferences and you will have the opportunity to speak to each teacher on the team.  You will start your conference with a pair of teachers and then meet with the next pair.  Mrs. Hubbard and Coach Page will meet with parents in Coach Page's room for a 10 minute conference.  Mr. Spinks and Ms. Hughes will meet with parents in Ms. Hughes's room for the remaining 10 minutes of your 20 minute conference time.

English/Language Arts News

As we begin another week of school, in ELA we will begin to further delve into the genre of Science Fiction. Last week, students completed a short introductory notes guide on "What Is Science Fiction?" This week, we will view short videos/clips of various types of Sci-Fi and respond to each of them. This will lay the groundwork for students' understanding of the different types of Sci-Fi so that they will be able to write their own Sci-Fi story in the coming weeks. We will spend approximately 4 weeks in this high-interest genre before moving on to Mystery, Macabre, and Urban Myths.

Fall Parent-Teacher Conferences are only a few more weeks away!  Please be on the lookout for a Conference Schedule Request Sheet to come home with your child Monday or Tuesday. This form allows parents to select their top three choices of times to schedule their child's 20 minute conference with all four academic teachers. Please have your child return the completed form with your preferences to his/her homeroom teacher as quickly as possible this week. All times are first-come, first-serve, and time slots fill up quickly!  Thank you in advance for your assistance with this!  Team Kani teachers are looking forward to meeting with each parent during these important conferences to discuss with you your child's strengths and any areas of improvement for growth.

Additionally, during the week of Parent-Teacher Conferences, the Book Fair will be held at the Hilsman Media Center.  When you come in for your child's conference, please take a few minutes to stop by the Book Fair and browse the many new and tried and true titles that are for sale!

Math News

Students ended last week by taking a test that covered the first half of Unit 2. Test grades will be posted by Wednesday. I had a lot of students turn in missing assignments this past week. Overall grades are updated on a daily basis, as I receive assignments from students.
As some of you hopefully noticed, last week's homework was a "Family Edition" homework assignment. I appreciate you taking the time to complete the assignment. My intention was that students would be given the opportunity to share their math knowledge with you or another family member. This week, homework will be given on Tuesday and be due on Thursday.
After much discussion, the 7th grade mathematics team has decided to spend this week reviewing content covered in Unit 1 in addition to the Unit 2 content we have been learning during the past two weeks. This decision was made with the students' best interest in mind. We believe this week is important to ensure that all students have a firm understanding of content we have covered so far this year before moving onto more rigorous topics. At the end of the week, we will have another test. Let me assure you that my intention in giving another assessment is to improve student learning and success.
As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Go Panthers!

Social Studies News

This week in social studies we will be continuing Unit 2 Middle East government and economics.  More than half of this unit is a review from 6th grade standards so students should be familiar with a lot of the information.  Our focus this week continue to be on the government standards listed below.  Students will take their third vocabulary quiz of the year of our first set of government vocabulary words.  The link to this weeks vocabulary word list is linked below.  Using the Middle East coach book and glossary in the ABOUT section of google classroom can be a helpful study resource.  Thank you for your support!

Government Vocabulary List 1
