Team Kani News: November 14-18

Happy Thanksgiving!

America Recycles Day, Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week, + International Children's Day

Every Hilsman student and faculty member is challenged to bring in at least one canned food item and 10 empty health or beautry product containers.  The canned food will be donated to the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia.  The money we earn from recycling the used health and beauty product containers will be donated to the Food Bank, too!

Math News

Last week, we finished Unit 2 in math class. This week, we will begin our study of Unit 3. In Unit 3, students will study equations, expressions, and inequalities. We will review using variables and solving one step equations before moving onto new, more difficult content.

All grades will be updated by Wednesday. Please check Parent Portal at some point this week as students' overall average will include our first Unit Test grade (60% of their respective average).

Student homework for this week is to complete 2 hours of Waggle time. Some students continue to keep up with their Waggle time, while others are falling behind and their average is suffering. Please have a conversation with your student about how much time they are dedicating to this valuable resource.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Go Panthers!

Social Studies News

This week in social studies students will take the Unit 3 Middle East History common assessment.  This is a summative grade and it is very important that students review the study guide.  A link to it is posted below. On Thursday we will be beginning Unit 4 Asia Geography.  This is our first Asia unit and students will be using the blended learning model.  With this model the unit assignments are uniquely tailored to each student but it also puts more emphasis on the students being self-directed.  With that said if students want to be successful during this unit they must complete the work on their tickets and pace themselves accordingly.  Also if your child is participating in Social Studies Fair the project due date is fast approaching in early December.  It is very important that students are using their ELT time as well as time at home working on their project.  The Middle East and Asia coach books in the ABOUT section of google classroom can be a helpful study resource.  Thank you for your support!

SS7H2 - The student will analyze continuity and change in Southwest Asia (Middle East) leading to the 21st century.
a. Explain how European partitioning in the Middle East after the breakup of the Ottoman Empire led to regional conflict.
           c. Describe how land and religion are reasons for continuing conflicts in the Middle East.
           d. Explain U.S. presence and interest in Southwest Asia; include the Persian Gulf conflict and invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq.
