Hilsman Health Center is now open!

The Hilsman Health Center is now officially open! In order for students to be served, they need to have a parent/guardian fill out a consent form and return it to Nurse Caitlyn. Once the form is returned, we can schedule an appointment. If students have their consent form signed (and on file) and we get verbal permission, our nurses can walk students to the Health Center while they're at school if it's for urgent care (fever, asthma visit, etc.). Otherwise, it operates like a regular doctor's office! They currently do not have a phone number (they're working on it!), but appointments can still be made through the Athens Neighborhood Health Center. They are also taking walk-in visits for the time being!

Students and staff are encouraged to wear a college or career t-shirt and uniform bottoms. Please make sure college or career is visible, as solid colors shirts are not permitted. If you do not wish to participate, please be in regular school uniform.

This week, students will be continuing the unit on the novel, The Outsider, by S.E. Hinton with a focus on cause/effect and citing textual evidence.  Our Language Standards this week will review parts of speech and revising sentences. 
Overview of the Week in ELA:
Monday: Chapter 5 Wrap-Up
Tuesday: Chapter 6 (Close-reading for Cause and Effect)
Wednesday: Grammar Stations
Thursday: Chapter 7/8 (Close-Reading for Cause and Effect)
Friday: Analyzing Randy as a Character and Greasers vs. Socs activity 


Math News

Upon return from the break students will explore variability as it relates to sample data and statistics. They select random samples of 30 from a population of 100, and they analyze the samples to help them draw conclusions about the population.

Students will also examine tables that list the measurements of Native American arrowheads found at six different archeological sites. Students read about archeologists who knew the approximate time periods during which four of the sites were settled. The time periods for the two newly discovered sites were unknown.  Students will be asked to use statistics to draw conclusions about when each of the unknown sites was settled. They compare the measurements of the arrowheads from the known sites, thus making comparative inferences about four samples of populations. Then they will compare data from the four known sites to data from the two unknown sites in order to estimate the time period during which each unknown site was settled.

Social Studies News

This week in Social Studies we will be finished up Southeast Asia Geography and looking at Environmental concerns. Test Re-take for Unit 3 will be on Tuesday, 12/10. Students must sign-up, complete test corrections and get this form signed."

Connections News


Family and Consumer Science
Seventh grade Family and Consumer Science students will spend the first two days of the week completing their Unit 2 Summative projects, demonstrating their understanding of ethical clothing care and purchase decisions. Wednesday will mark the beginning of our final unit; we will spend some time examining child development stages and milestones prior to entering into the last week of the semester.

Orchestra News

Concert this Wednesday Nov 13th at 6:30, HMS Cafeteria
Our Fall Concert is almost here!  Orchestra students in all grades will perform.  Students should report to the orchestra room between 5:45 and 6:00 to tune.  The concert will begin at 6:30 and last approximately 35 minutes.  Students should plan on attending the entire concert. Hearing the other grade levels performances can be great motivation!  Concert attire is a black collared shirt, khaki or black long pants.  Please no shorts or jeans.  Concerts are summative grades in orchestra class and attendance is required.  Please let me Ms. Floyd know if you have any questions. Looking forward to seeing you all soon!

BAND NEWS

Band Concert:  Monday, December 16 at 6:30 in the Hilsman Gymnasium.
Band students are required to attend and should arrive at 6:10.

March 16, 2020 Parents Guide to Google Classroom  link Hilsman Cyber Days Letter to Parents and Students   Hilsman Administration School closed Monday, March 16 through Friday March 20. More details as we received them from the Clarke County District Superintendent Meals for Students — The Clarke County School District will provide free meals to students during the closure caused by the COVID-19 virus. The district will offer meals for pick up at two school sites as well as neighborhood hubs. Students will receive a breakfast and lunch meal. Service will begin Tuesday, March 17.  Service Guidelines  To ensure the safety of all our students, we request the following guidelines be followed: 1. We have implemented distance learning throughout the district, in which our students and staff will continue school virtually from home. Announcements:  Students Return Face-to-Face This Week! K-8 students will begin in-person instruction starting Monday November 9th, with families also having the option to remain virtual.
