NEWS from ELA



This week we are continuing our study of science fiction.  Last week students read the teleplay "The Monsters are Due on Maple Street."  This week, we are watching two video versions of this classic story, the original "Twilight Zone" episode and a more modern version with a slightly different theme.  Students will answer comprehension and reflection questions about the original video and write about themes or lessons each episode teaches.  Later in the week, students will read the short story "Harrison Bergeron" and write their response by answering the question,"When is equal not always fair?" We will round out the week with a look at David Bowie's song "Space Oddity" and reflect on our experience with the science fiction genre.

Links to all the assignments are posted below.  Please check Parent Portal and encourage your child to make up missing assignments!  Many students have zeroes.  Ask your student to show you his/her Google Classroom account, where assignments are posted.

Social Studies

This week in social studies we will continue in Unit 1 Middle East Geography.  This week we are focusing on the major religions and ethnic groups of the region.  This content can be quite difficult to understand for some students so it is important that they are reading and going over their notes to reinforce these concepts at home.  The Middle East coach book I have shared with them in Google Drive as well and the monotheistic readings from Google classroom are a great resource for this.  We will also be taking Geography Vocabulary Quiz 2.  It is important that students study these words each night if they are going to be consistently successful on these quizzes.  A link to the word list is below.

Math News


This week in Math we wrap up Unit 1 - Operations with Rational Numbers. 

Monday: No School - Happy Labor Day!!!
Tuesday: End of Unit MYP Task. Study Guide assigned in goggle classroom.
Wednesday: End of Unit MYP Task and Unit Vocabulary Review
Thursday: GRASP Testing and Review for Unit Test tomorrow. 
Friday: UNIT 1 TEST. Study Guide and MYP Task due today. Unit 2 readiness assigned in google classroom. Students are to write their answers in their math notebooks. Due Monday. 

Students who make a grade below 100% are expected to correct their wrong answers and re-submit for partial credit for all assignments except vocabulary tests and some on-line assessments.

March 16, 2020 Parents Guide to Google Classroom  link Hilsman Cyber Days Letter to Parents and Students   Hilsman Administration School closed Monday, March 16 through Friday March 20. More details as we received them from the Clarke County District Superintendent Meals for Students — The Clarke County School District will provide free meals to students during the closure caused by the COVID-19 virus. The district will offer meals for pick up at two school sites as well as neighborhood hubs. Students will receive a breakfast and lunch meal. Service will begin Tuesday, March 17.  Service Guidelines  To ensure the safety of all our students, we request the following guidelines be followed: 1. Students must be present to get their meals.  2. At this time, adult meals are not available for purchase.  3. Students must take the entire meal – choices will not be provided.  4. Monday, March 23, 2020 2020 Week 10. March 30, 2020 Hilsman Administration General Information While our school is closed, school will continue from home. We have implemented distance learning throughout the district, in which our students and staff will continue school virtually from home. For full details on how these Cyber Days will work, we hope the following links will be helpful: Panther Cyber Days One-Stop Shop (a slideshow containing all relevant info regarding assignments, schedules, meal services, laptops/WiFi, contact info, etc.) Meal Service for CCSD Students Meals for students will continue during our school closure. Announcements:  Students Return Face-to-Face This Week! K-8 students will begin in-person instruction starting Monday November 9th, with families also having the option to remain virtual. This is because much of Monday will be spent going over new rules and procedures with our face-to-face students as we get used to returning to the building.
