Trick or Treat for UNICEF is this week, but what is "UNICEF"?   UNICEF is the United Nations Children's Fund. UNICEF began in the aftermath of World War II, supplying dried milk, nutritional supplements, medicines, immunizations and other urgent assistance to help starving and ill children in Europe, the Middle East and China. Today UNICEF works in more than 190 countries and territories to save and improve children's lives by working to ensure child rights and providing health care, immunizations, nutrition, access to safe water and sanitation services, basic education, protection and emergency relief.  UNICEF has helped save more children's lives than any other humanitarian organization.  UNICEF is a 4 star charity. For every donor dollar, 90.2 cents goes toward programs and services that directly help children; 7.1 cents is spent on fundraising costs and 2.7 cents on administration. UNICEF's 990 tax forms are available online.

Trick or Treat for UNICEF at Hilsman begins this week!   With the hurricane in Mexico, Syrian refugee crisis, drought in Africa...there are children everywhere in need of emergency help.   Campaign details can be found here:   Hilsman UNICEF 2015 Campaign If you know of donors that prefer to pay by credit card instead of the orange Trick or Treat box, they may donate through our on-line fundraiser.  A link is here:  https://www.crowdrise.com/setunicef2014.  The video shown in the on-line fundraiser tells donors what UNICEF does and how it helps children. The homeroom that collects the most funds for UNICEF this Halloween season will win a pizza party and there will be prize drawings for individual student and teacher participants.

Notebook Check #2 Change:  I had originally planned to check Notebooks on Thursday and Friday of last week, but I have to change my plans because I was diagnosed with the flu on Thursday.  I should be better and able to return to work later this week.  If students need their Notebooks, they can get them from the baskets (where they turned them in) so that they can study for the Benchmark Test.  The students can turn them back in this Thursday, and I will check them during Fall Break.

WAGGLE: Students are expected to complete at least 2 hours per week in order to get full credit for their weekly homework grade. Students who do not meet this requirement will be given a grade of 55. Students can make up that grade by doing additional time another week. Please encourage your child to spend at least 30 minutes each night completing their assignments.

Students who make a grade below 100% are expected to correct their wrong answers and re-submit for partial credit for all assignments except vocabulary tests and some on-line assessments. Corrections can be done during homeroom, ELT, lunch or after-school. Students must have their homeroom, ELT or lunch teacher's permission. Arrangements for after school must be made in advance. Students are to be picked up by 5pm.

Parents please check Campus regularly and monitor your child's grades and assignment completion. Assignments with a grade 55 and NHI in the comment box means that assignment was Not Handed In. Email me at baldwink@clarke. k12.ga.us for questions, comments and concerns.

Important Dates
Thursday, November 5th - Math Benchmark Assessment

Extra Credit
Students who reach 50% completion with a grade 70 or higher on MobyMax State Test Prep by 5 p.m. on Monday, January 4th will receive extra credit for the 2nd marking period.

Social Studies

This week in social studies we will be continuing with Unit 3 Middle East history and continuing our focus on the Palestinian/Israeli conflict.  On Thursday students will take a short quiz over the Ottoman Empire and the conflicts in Israel.  Due to the fact this is a formative grade no study guide will be given.  Students can prepare by reading over their notes and presentations shared with them in Google classroom over the Ottoman Empire, Palestine, and Israel.  The Middle East coach book pp. 120-124 is also a great study resource.  There will not be a vocabulary quiz this week.  Thanks for your support!
