English/Language Arts News

This week in ELA, we will wrap up our first unit on Folktales and begin Unit 2, Exploring the Extraordinary. In this unit, students will learn about Science Fiction (Sci-Fi), Urban Myths, and Mystery. Over the coming weeks, we will view short Sci-Fi films and clips that illustrate the elements of this fascinating genre of literature. Additionally, students will read Sci-Fi texts, and respond through writing to the various films and texts we have studied. Students will also have the opportunity to write their own Sci-Fi narrative, as well as conduct research and report on some aspect of Sci-Fi. After finishing Sci-Fi, we will then turn our attentions briefly to Urban Myths and Mystery to round out our unit.

All ELA classes will be visiting the Media Center on Tuesday to hear about our upcoming Book Fair later in October!  Students will also have the opportunity during this visit to return and check out new and exciting books. If your child has any books at home that need to be returned, please help him/her remember to bring them Tuesday morning to school so that the books can be returned to the media center, and your child can check out new books to read at home.

Progress Reports were given out on Tuesday of last week. If you have not seen your child's Progress Report, please ask him/her for that. This is an important means of providing you with a "snapshot" of your child's progress in each of his/her classes. Also, the reports were in a signature envelope that needs to be signed and returned. If your child has not returned the envelope to his/her homeroom teacher, please help us to get those in so that we know you have viewed the progress report, and we can send future progress reports home in the same envelope. Thank you for your continued support at home.

Math News

In math, students are in the middle of Unit 2 - Stretching and Shrinking. We are studying similar figures and scale factor. Students had one homework assignment and one quiz this past week. Grades will be posted by Wednesday this week. Per usual, students will receive a homework assignment on Tuesday this week and the assignment will be due on Thursday.
Students will also have a math TEST on Friday! As many students struggled on the first test, this is a great opportunity to raise their respective overall grade. We will take at least one full day in class to review for the test. Please continue to remind your student to complete their homework assignments each week.
As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Go Panthers!

Social Studies News

This week in social studies we will be finishing up Unit 1 Middle East Geography. Tomorrow students will take the Unit 1 common assessment.  This will be their first summative exam of the year.  Students received study guides last Monday in Google classroom and they are due today before the beginning of their class.  A link to the study guide is posted below.  On Wednesday students will begin Unit 2 Middle East government and economics.  More than half of this unit is a review from 6th grade standards so students should be familiar with a lot of the information.  Using the Middle East coach book and glossary in the ABOUT section of google classroom can be a helpful study resource.  TIP charts for last Friday's vocabulary quiz are due on Thursday.  Thank you for your support!
