Team Kani News: October 10-14, 2016

Parent Conference Week

Parent Conferences will take place this week!

Team Kani will host 20 minute conferences and you will have the opportunity to speak to each teacher on the team.  You will start your conference with a pair of teachers and then meet with the next pair.  Mrs. Hubbard and Coach Page will meet with parents in Coach Page's room for a 10 minute conference.  Mr. Spinks and Ms. Hughes will meet with parents in Ms. Hughes's room for the remaining 10 minutes of your 20 minute conference time.

English/Language Arts News
As we start the 2nd 9 weeks of the school year, ELA will continue studying the genre of Science Fiction. Due to our shortened week with the student holiday on Monday as well as Early Release for Parent-Teacher conferences Wednesday-Friday, students will focus their time in class on reading two short, but very intriguing Sci-Fi texts, and then they will respond to those texts through writing.

Students will also have the opportunity to purchase books at the Book Fair this week when we visit the Media Center for both Book Fair and check-outs on Thursday, Oct. 13th. Parents are welcome to also visit the Book Fair with their child to browse and/or purchase books on Wednesday afternoon/evening.

Please continue to check Parent Portal for updates on your child's progress, and encourage your child to turn in his/her work for all classes on time!  I look forward to another exciting quarter of teaching your child!

Math News

We made it to the 2nd 9 weeks of school! This week will be spent investigating proportions, unit rates, and scaling. Since our week is unique due to students being out on Monday and early release Wednesday-Friday, we will not have a quiz or test in math this week.

Waggle Update: all students should have access to an online resource called Waggle. Students should log-on and complete at least 2 hours of Waggle time each week. I will be monitoring this resource and will assign a homework grade to each student every week based on their Waggle time (2 full hours of Waggle = 100% as a homework grade).

As we move into a new nine weeks at school, I want to insure you that I have seen great progress among students. We have already learned a lot of math this year. Having said that, I have informed students that our content only gets harder from this point on. Please make sure you are staying up to date with your child's grade and any missing assignments. Grades are updated at least once a week. Students know they are welcome to come get extra help from me after school on Tuesdays and before school on Thursdays. Thanks for your support!
As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Go Panthers!

Social Studies News

This week in social studies we will be finishing up Unit 2 Middle East government and economics  More than half of this unit is a review from 6th grade standards so students should be familiar with a lot of the information.  Wednesday and if needed Thursday students will take their Unit 2 Common Assessment.  A copy of the study guide with answers is linked below.  Using the Middle East coach book and glossary in the ABOUT section of google classroom can be a helpful study resource.  Thank you for your support!
