Report Cards
The second nine weeks of school have come to an end, which means teachers will be submitting final grades for Q2 report cards in the coming days. Report cards will be distributed and sent home the on January 10th. If you have questions or concerns about your child's grades or academic standing, please contact their teacher(s). A full contact list for the 7th grade faculty is listed at the bottom of the blog.

ELA News
Monday, January 7, 2019 to Friday, January 11, 2019: Welcome to the new year! Happy new year to all of our wonderful students and parents! This week we will be working on reviewing school procedures, routines, PAWS, and expectations. Students will be focusing on quick writes and teachers will be giving students feedback on their writing. We are looking forward to a strong start for the 2nd half of the school year!

ELAGSE7W1: Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence.
ELAGSE7RI6:Determine two or more central ideas in a text and analyze their development over the course of the text; provide an objective summary of the text.
ELAGSE7SL3: Delineate a speaker’s argument and specific claims, evaluating the soundness of the reasoning and the relevance and sufficiency of the evidence.
ELAGSE7L3: Use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing, speaking, reading, or listening.

Math News
We are in Unit 3 this week. Unit 3 is about equations and inequalities. In this unit, students are developing skills in areas that are traditionally known as algebra. They learn algebraic methods for solving equations. Students will also solve linear inequalities in one variable and represent their solutions on a number line. Family Materials for this unit. Khan Academy is another good resource for students with internet access.

Homework for this week: Homework Q3 #1 (due 1/11) Students with internet access can also build fluency by using MobyMax, either "Fact Fluency" or "Math".

Monday 1/7: Using Balanced Hanger Diagrams to solve equations
Tuesday 1/8: Choose the easier way to solve equations involving the distributive property
Wednesday 1/9: Using Equations to solve problems with negative integers
Thursday 1/10: Solving Two-Step equations
Friday: 1/11: Solving Two-Step equations

Science News
Unit 2:  Structure & Function of Living Systems "Cells"

S7L2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to describe how cell structures, cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems interact to maintain the basic needs of organisms.

a. Develop a model and construct an explanation of how cell structures (specifically the nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, cell wall, chloroplasts, lysosome, and mitochondria) contribute to the function of the cell as a system in obtaining nutrients in order to grow, reproduce, make needed materials, and process waste. (Clarification statement: The intent is for students to demonstrate how the component structures of the cell interact and work together to allow the cell as a whole to carry out various processes. Additional structures, beyond those listed, will be addressed in high school Biology.)


Supplies Needed for Future Labs:  Gummy Bears, Small Clear Plastic Cups, Sharpie Markers, Table Salt, Coffee Filters, & Old Knee-high Stockings (washed, please)

Social Studies News
Students will begin the new year studying the modern history of several countries in Asia, focusing on major events from the last 75-100 years in each country. This week they will learn about Japan, Korea, and Vietnam.

SS7H3 Analyze continuity and change in Southern and Eastern Asia.
a. Describe how nationalism led to independence in India.
b. Describe the impact of Mohandas Gandhi’s belief in non-violent protest.
c. Explain the role of the United States in the rebuilding of Japan after WWII.
d. Describe the impact of communism in China in terms of Mao Zedong, the Great Leap Forward, the Cultural Revolution, and Tiananmen Square.
e. Explain the reasons for foreign involvement in Korea and Vietnam in terms of containment of communism.
