7th Grade News: April 1-5, 2019

Monday 4/1- Dress Down Day for Binder Checks
Students who received 200 or more points on their March binder checks may dress down. Please be sure to follow the HMS dress code policy. If you have any questions about binder checks, please call the school or email your student's teachers.

Experience UGA Field Trip -- this week!
The 7th grade will be taking a field trip to the Botanical Gardens and UGArden (pronounced "u-garden"). Students will hike in the woods and learn about growing crops and biodiversity. We will eat sack lunches outside. Permission slips were given out and signed during parent teacher conferences, but if you have not signed one for your child yet, please have him or her return it ASAP! We want ALL students to go on this free field trip.  Students that do not return the permission form will remain at school in a Milestones Prep Workshop.

Not sure which day your student is going of the field trip? Look at this list:
  • Tuesday, April 2: Homeroom students of Aqui, Barton, Benson, Dalton, Hughes, Gaertig, Dorsey, Richmond, Zabetakis, & Willingham
  • Thursday, April 4: Homeroom students of Heu, Hubbard, Hussain, Page, Scott, & Wood
Clothing & Items Required:  Water bottle, Drawstring bag for carrying lunch & water bottle, school uniform and closed-toe shoes (sneakers or hiking shoes)

Orchestra Concert: Thursday April 11th
The HMS Orchestra is performing their Spring Concert on Thursday, April 11 at 6:30 in the Cedar Shoals Fine Arts Theatre. Everyone is invited!

ELA News
Monday, April 01, 2019 to Friday, April 05, 2019: Students will be introduced to poetry and starting a poetry unit. Students will know that a poem can be simply a powerful string of words in one sentence, with as much beauty and creativity as a long epic.

ELAGSE7L1: Demonstrate the command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage. Choose among simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences to signal differing relationships among ideas.
ELAGSE7RL2: Determine two or more central ideas in a text and analyze their development over the course of the text; provide an objective summary of the text.

Math News
We are in Unit 5, which focuses on Geometry. Students will recognize, analyze, measure, and reason about the shapes and visual patterns that are important features of our world.
Khan Academy is a good resource for students with internet access.
Here is a link to a resource that may help family members help their scholar in this unit.

Homework #3 will be handed-out on Mon 4/1 and is due Fri 4/5.

Social Studies News
Students did a great job reading the novel A Long Walk to Water. Ask your student about it. This novel is fantastic, and discussing reading material is always beneficial for students.  Most students finished most of their novel assignment. Any unfinished work can be turned in this week. A digital copy and the questions are online. **Please note: Students must support all of their answers with a quotation from the book. This is the most challenging part of the assignment, and it counts for half of the credit.**

Wednesday: Read and discuss deforestation + write in journals

Here are the standards we are teaching:
SS7G2 Explain environmental issues across the continent of Africa.
a. Explain how water pollution and unequal access to water impacts irrigation, trade, industry, and drinking water.
b. Explain the relationship between poor soil and deforestation in Sub-Saharan Africa.
c. Explain the impact of desertification on the environment of Africa.


SS7G3 Explain the impact of location, climate, and physical characteristics on population distribution in Africa.

Spanish News
The Spanish 1 placement exam will be on May 8. This qualifies students to take high school Spanish 1 as 8th grade students and receive high school credit before beginning high school. All 7th grade students can take the exam.
