7th Grade News: March 25-29, 2019

Parent Conferences
THANK YOU to all of the parents that came out for conferences. We applaud all that you do to support your students. If you still need to meet for a conference and get paperwork (report card, scheduling for 8th grade, etc), please email or call your student's homeroom teacher. A 7th grade email list is at the end of this blog post. If you don't know who to contact, either call the front office or email Mr. Hussain (hussainn@clarke.k12.ga.us) and we will get you in touch with the right person!

Experience UGA Field Trip
Next week the 7th grade will be taking a field trip to the Botanical Gardens and UGArden (pronounced "u-garden"). Students will hike in the woods and learn about growing crops and biodiversity. We will eat sack lunches outside. Half of the 7th grade will be going on Tuesday, April 2, and the other half of the 7th grade will be going on Thursday, April 4. Permission slips were given out and signed during parent teacher conferences, but if you have not signed one for your child yet, please have him or her return it by Thursday, March 28! We want ALL students to go on this free field trip.  Students that do not return the permission form will remain at school in a Milestones Prep Workshop.

Congratulations to our chess team!
The Hilsman Chess Club team once again wins the 7th Annual Chess & Community Conference at the Classic Center in downtown Athens on Saturday, March 23, 2019. There are several 7th grade students on the team and we are extremely proud of their work!

Hilsman took first place in the Middle School division with a purse of $200 for their effort. Check out some photos here!

Social Studies News
Most students did MUCH better using their notes for the quiz last Friday. We will continue to work on the skill of note-taking and have another open-note quiz in the future.

This week students will be reading another novel, A Long Walk to Water. This novel is fantastic. It tells two stories: one story is about Salva, an boy who is forced to leave his village in the 1980s to avoid civil war, and the other story is about Nya, a girl who has to walk to the nearest pond twice each day to get water for her family.

Students will have access to a digital copy in Google Classroom since we don't have enough paper copies to send home with every student. Students will be writing in their journals each day after reading. They will be answering these questions or can choose to complete a Challenge by Choice option. This will be a test/project grade. **Please note: Students must support all of their answers with a quotation from the book. This is the most challenging part of the assignment, and it counts for half of the credit.**

Monday: Chapters 1-4
Tuesday: Chapters 5-8
Wednesday: Chapters 9-12
Thursday: Chapters 13-16
Friday: Chapters 17-end

Here are the standards we are teaching:
SS7G2 Explain environmental issues across the continent of Africa.
a. Explain how water pollution and unequal access to water impacts irrigation, trade, industry, and drinking water.
b. Explain the relationship between poor soil and deforestation in Sub-Saharan Africa.
c. Explain the impact of desertification on the environment of Africa.

SS7G3 Explain the impact of location, climate, and physical characteristics on population distribution in Africa.
