You received a letter with information about high school Physical Science during your students' conference. Those letters are due on May 1. Important Upcoming Dates the 7th graders
Please be advised of the following important upcoming dates for 7th graders over the last quarter:

April 17-24 - Testing (Milestones and MAP)
May 1 - High school science enrollment letter due
May 14 - 7th grade awards ceremony (it is currently schedule to take place during the evening at the old/new Hilsman gym)
May 17 - Last Day of School / early dismissal

ELA News
Tuesday, April 16, 2019 to Friday, April 19, 2019: Students will be reviewing for the milestones test. We will be focusing on: grammar, reading comprehension, poetry, writing, and vocabulary review. We will also be focusing in on test taking strategies.

ELAGSE7L1: Demonstrate the command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage. Choose among simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences to signal differing relationships among ideas.
ELAGSE7RL2: Determine two or more central ideas in a text and analyze their development over the course of the text; provide an objective summary of the text.

Math News
We are in Unit 5, which focuses on Geometry. Students will recognize, analyze, measure, and reason about the shapes and visual patterns that are important features of our world.
Khan Academy is a good resource for students with internet access.
Here is a link to a resource that may help family members help their scholar in this unit.

Social Studies News
Students just finished a unit on the diverse geography and cultures in Africa. They are beginning a unit on the modern history of Africa this week. There is not a social studies milestones test, and our curriculum will continue until the end of the school year.

Tuesday-Thursday: Colonization of Africa
Friday: Pan-Africanism

Standards for this unit:
SS7H1 Analyze continuity and change in Africa.
a. Explain how the European partitioning across Africa contributed to conflict, civil war, and artificial political boundaries in Africa today.
b. Explain how the Pan-African movement and nationalism led to independence in Kenya and Nigeria.
c. Explain the creation and end of apartheid in South Africa and the roles of Nelson Mandela and F.W.de Klerk

Spanish News
The Spanish 1 placement exam will be on May 8. This qualifies students to take high school Spanish 1 as 8th grade students and receive high school credit before beginning high school. All 7th grade students can take the exam.

 4pm-5:30pm at Sra. Laura's room.

MAP Testing MAP Testing will take place December 3-5.  The testing schedule is linked here:   MAP Testing Schedule Hilsman Health Center is now open! The Hilsman Health Center is now officially open! In order for students to be served, they need to have a parent/guardian fill out a consent form and return it to Nurse Caitlyn. Once the form is returned, we can schedule an appointment. If students have their consent form signed (and on file) and we get verbal permission, our nurses can walk students to the Health Center while they're at school if it's for urgent care (fever, asthma visit, etc.). Otherwise, it operates like a regular doctor's office! They currently do not have a phone number (they're working on it!), but appointments can still be made through the Athens Neighborhood Health Center. Family Science Night Thursday, March 21 5:00-6:30 pm Please join us! Parent Conferences this week! Parent conferences are this week, Wednesday-Friday. These days are also early release days and school ends at 1:30pm. We hope to see each parent/guardian at Hilsman this week to discuss your student's performance and how to ensure they succeed in the last quarter of the year.
