7th Grade News: April 8-12, 2019

Monday 4/1- High school Physical Science
You received a letter with information about high school Physical Science during your students' conference. Those letters are due on May 1. If you still have questions about your student taking this high school class as a 8th grade student, please contact one of the science teachers or Malenie Maxey at maxeym@clarke.k12.ga.us.

Orchestra Concert: Thursday April 11th
The Spring Concert will feature ALL Hilsman Orchestra Students. Please invite friends and family to come enjoy the concert!

Students should report to the orchestra room at Cedar Shoals between 5:45-6:00 already dressed and ready to perform. Students will need to bring their own violins and violas with them that day.  Students with home cellos and basses may bring them. School instruments will be provided for students without a cello or bass. Concert attire consists of a black collared shirt and black or khaki pants or skirts. Please no shorts or short skirts and no hoodies.

April 17-24 - Milestones testing
May 1 - High school science enrollment letter due
May 14 - 7th grade awards ceremony (it is currently schedule to take place during the evening at the old/new Hilsman gym)
May 17 - Last Day of School / early dismissal

ELA News
Monday, April 8, 2019 to Friday, April 12, 2019: Students will be preparing for the milestones test the following week. We will be focusing on: grammar, reading comprehension, poetry, writing,and vocabulary review. We will also be focusing in on test taking strategies the following week.

ELAGSE7L1: Demonstrate the command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage. Choose among simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences to signal differing relationships among ideas.
ELAGSE7RL2: Determine two or more central ideas in a text and analyze their development over the course of the text; provide an objective summary of the text.

Math News
We are in Unit 5, which focuses on Geometry. Students will recognize, analyze, measure, and reason about the shapes and visual patterns that are important features of our world.
Khan Academy is a good resource for students with internet access.
Here is a link to a resource that may help family members help their scholar in this unit.

Homework #4 will be handed-out on Mon 4/8 and is due Fri 4/12.
Mon 4/8: Surface area and volume of a rectangular prism
Tue 4/9: Milestone Prep
Wed 4/10: Surface area and volume of a rectangular prism
Thu 4/11: Least possible surface area given a volume of rectangular prism
Fri 4/12: Volume and surface area of various sided prisms.

Related Math Standards:
G.3 Describe the two-dimensional figures (cross sections) that result from slicing three-dimensional figures, as in plane sections of right rectangular prisms, right rectangular pyramids, cones, cylinders, and spheres.
G.6 SOLVE real-world and mathematical problems involving area, volume and surface area of two- and three-dimensional objects composed of triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, cubes, and right prisms.

Social Studies News
Students are finishing a unit on the diverse geography and cultures in Africa. They received a study guide last Wednesday and it is due this Wednesday, April 10. It needs three signatures to receive full credit, and one of those signatures needs to be from a parent or guardian. If your student has struggled with the social studies tests this year, talk to them about which study options they are choosing; encourage them to complete more than three if necessary.

Monday: African ethnic and religious groups
Tuesday: African ethnic and religious groups
Wednesday: Study guide due
Thursday: Review for test and Milestones review day
Friday: Unit 7 Test

Here are the standards we are teaching:
SS7G4 Analyze the diverse cultural characteristics of the people who live in Africa. a. Explain the differences between an ethnic group and a religious group. b. Describe the diversity of religions within African ethnic groups.

Spanish News
The Spanish 1 placement exam will be on May 8. This qualifies students to take high school Spanish 1 as 8th grade students and receive high school credit before beginning high school. All 7th grade students can take the exam.
