7th Grade News: August 12-16, 2019

General 7th grade information

Thanks for a fantastic first week!

We would like to thank all of the parents, guardians, families, and community members who helped make this a wonderful first week of school at Hilsman! The first week of school can can be a little hectic as everyone adjusts to new routines, but we are so grateful for our Hilsman family's support and cooperation as we continue to iron out some kinks. It's going to be an awesome year!

School Supplies Reminder

Students need to make sure they have the following supplies: 2 inch binder or trapper keeper, school agenda ($10 to replace if lost), pencil pouch/pencil case, at least 2 pencils, 2 colored pens, 2 highlighters, dividers, notebook paper, homework folder, 1 composition book for social studies

If you have any questions or concerns about school supplies, please email Christina Fassbender at fassbenderc@clarke.k12.ga.us.

Agenda Spotlight: PAWS Pages

Have you seen your student's agenda? If not, ask them to see it! Look at the yellow PAWS pages. If they are caught doing something awesome or excellent, teachers can stamp or initial on these yellow pages, which students can then use to earn incentives like dress down days, catered lunches, etc. Ask your child to show you their PAWS pages!

MAP Testing: Begins Thursday

Students will begin MAP testing on Thursday in ELT (3rd period). They will take a Language assessment, Reading assessment, and Math assessment over 6 days. While that seems like a lot of time, students are only taking the assessment during 3rd period each day and we do not want any student to be rushed. The MAP Growth assessments are used to accurately schedule ELT classes, to help students set academic goals, and to monitor students' progress throughout the year. Here are the answers to 12 Common Questions Parents ask about the MAP Growth Assessment.

No school on August 23 and 26!

Have you seen the new school? Someone called it the Taj Ma"hil" since it's so big. We can't want to have students begin attending on August 27. Remember there is no school for students on Friday 8/23 and Monday 8/26 so teachers can move. All classes will resume on Tuesday 8/27 at the new Hilsman. Check on some photos of the interior!
The hallways are so wide! Lockers are built in.

The art classroom is amazing! All of the classrooms have ample space.

Cool hallway! There are lots of windows and natural light throughout the school.

Cafeteria + Auditorium = "Cafetorium"

Volleyball tryouts: Tuesday from 4:30-6pm

Volleyball tryouts for 7th and 8th graders will be on Tuesday from 4:30-6:00. Students must be eligible and have a current physical on file. The location is not yet decided, so students should listen to the announcements to find out. Questions? Email Mr. Watkins at watkinsra@clarke.k12.ga.us

Have a question about your student's schedule?

You can email your student's homeroom teacher (email addresses are below) or call the front office and leave a message. We'll help you as soon as possible! ELT will be during 3rd period for all grade levels this year. However, students will report to homeroom for advisement during this class period until we move to the new building.

Math News

We will still be working in Unit 1 with number lines.
Monday: Students will be learning how to write a number sentence to represent a change on a number line, and how to use a number line to represent a number sentence.
Tuesday and Wednesday: Students will be learning how to use a chip model to represent addition and subtraction.
Thursday and Friday: These two days will be used for additional practice on what students have learned so far. There will be a check-up quiz on Friday.

Accelerated Math: We will be completing investigation 1: introduction to probability. There will be a quiz on Tuesday, and we will begin investigation 2 on Wednesday. Students will explore theoretical and experimental probability. Students choose colored blocks from a bag to determine experimental probabilities. They find the theoretical probabilities by counting the number of each color and then finding the fraction of blocks of a certain color in the bag. Then, students contrast the theoretical probabilities with experimental probabilities.
