General 7th grade information

Monday, August 5 - First Day of School!

We're excited to see all of our students for the first day of school in just a few short days! Students can begin getting breakfast or going to homeroom at 8am, and their first class starts at 8:25am. School ends at 3:45pm. Please bear with us patiently through traffic and any hiccups for the first few days as we smooth out the logistics of dismissal.

No school - August 23 and 26

Hilsman students do not have school on Friday 8/23 and Monday 8/26 so teachers can move into our beautiful new school building. All classes will resume on Tuesday 8/27 at the new Hilsman.

Have a question about your student's schedule?

You can email your student's homeroom teacher (email addresses are below) or call the front office and leave a message. We'll help you as soon as possible! ELT will be during 3rd period for all grade levels this year. However, students will report to homeroom for advisement during this class period until we move to the new building.

Content news

ELA News

Monday and Tuesday students will be getting to know their teacher and classmates by engaging in community building activities and creating classroom norms! 
Wednesday and Thursday students will be focusing on their identity by closely reading "I Am" poems and then creating their own. 
On Friday students will read "Seventh Grade" by Gary Soto and begin to learn some critical reading strategies to help them better understand complex text!

Math News

We will be starting Unit 1 and working with number lines. 
Tuesday and Wednesday: Students will be using number lines to add and subtract both positive and negative numbers. 
Thursday: Students will be using the number lines to compare numbers, find the distance between two numbers, and locate the halfway point between two numbers
Friday: Students will be learning how to write a number sentence to represent a change on a number line, and how to use a number line to represent a number sentence.

 Homework will be given out on Tuesday 8/6 and will be due Friday 8/9. Please have syllabus signed and returned by Friday 8/9.

 Overview of the Week in Science Class:
  • Monday = Introductions, Routines, & Procedures
  • Tuesday-Thursday = Introduction to Ecology
  • Friday = Quiz #1
  • Homework for the Week: Organize Composition Book (it will serve as an Interactive Notebook) and get Syllabus signed & return it to school

Social Studies News

We are reviewing maps skills before beginning unit 1 on Friday. Unit 1 focuses on the geography, environmental issues, religions, and ethnic groups in the Middle East.

 Monday: Get to know students and go over the 7th grade social studies syllabus
Tuesday: Compare and contrast human geography and physical geography
Wednesday: Review relative location, examine maps of Earth
Thursday: Review longitude and latitude
Friday: Label physical features on a map of the Middle East

MAP Testing MAP Testing will take place December 3-5.  The testing schedule is linked here:   MAP Testing Schedule Hilsman Health Center is now open! The Hilsman Health Center is now officially open! In order for students to be served, they need to have a parent/guardian fill out a consent form and return it to Nurse Caitlyn. Once the form is returned, we can schedule an appointment. If students have their consent form signed (and on file) and we get verbal permission, our nurses can walk students to the Health Center while they're at school if it's for urgent care (fever, asthma visit, etc.). Otherwise, it operates like a regular doctor's office! They currently do not have a phone number (they're working on it!), but appointments can still be made through the Athens Neighborhood Health Center. Family Science Night Thursday, March 21 5:00-6:30 pm Please join us! Parent Conferences this week! Parent conferences are this week, Wednesday-Friday. These days are also early release days and school ends at 1:30pm.
